The KPop Demon Hunters Series: Inspired by the Impulse to Allow Female Characters Act Goofy On-Screen

It would be a massive understatement to claim that KPop Demon Hunters has taken the world by storm. Audiences cite various reasons for its immense success, including its infectious songs, a vibrant fan community that produces its original dance routines and song versions, and a staggering volume of fanfiction.

KPop Demon Hunters (2025)

As a woman, one of the most beloved aspects of KPop Demon Hunters is the relationship between Huntr/x's members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Against all challenges, they band together to vanquish evil and restore the Honmoon. While there is an complicated love story between Rumi and Jinu from Saja Boys, it doesn't detract from the endearing connection among the three girls. They are boisterous, confident and aren't afraid to look a little goofy.

Deliberate Goofiness of Huntr/x

As revealed by the director and writer, the silliness of Huntr/x was intentional. Speaking at a recent press conference alongside the vocalists and fellow director/writer Chris Appelhans, Kang was asked about the key elements she wanted female viewers to see in the series.

"The most important is I wanted to see really silly women," Kang explained. "You know, we're often hesitant, especially in animation, to show female characters be really silly and be the silliest one in the room."

She recalled her experiences from working on films where a troupe of five [or] six main characters included a single female lead. Creators faced difficulties in extended discussions about defining her distinctiveness. Kang suggested making the most comedic role female, but the idea was often dismissed.

Empowerment Through Humor

Kang admitted that this frustration over the unwillingness to showcase goofy female characters directly influenced the creation of KPop Demon Hunters. She was determined to make all three Huntr/x members humorous.

"I firmly believe there's empowerment and strength in comedy," Kang said. "Being funny requires bravery. To propose gags. To be silly in front of somebody. And when you discover friends that embrace you and your weirdest side, and they are just as weird with you, that is an ideal bond. I was eager to showcase that type of female relationship."

The strategy succeeded: The series is filled with hilarious scenes, often expressed via vibrant visuals. Examples include the trio slurping noodles with big, bulging eyes and falling over each other when they see the attractive Saja Boys. These comedic elements make the characters unforgettable and are undoubtedly a major factor why fans are deeply engaged and hoping for a follow-up project.

KPop Demon Hunters is available to watch on Netflix.
