Review: How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) – Unrivaled Hilarious Instants on TV

Once again, Alan Partridge faces turmoil! However, many are in similar straits today? During his previous television outing, Alan had an on-air breakdown while presenting the magazine program This Time, ending the series quite literally locked out of the BBC. At the start of his new, self-produced project, the non-fiction piece How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), the broadcaster reveals he’s encountered further difficulties by fainting into the lap of a female interviewee at a business function for a Norfolk feed company. Tough times, but personalities of Partridge’s calibre know how to bounce back: link personal issues to broader trends and see if you can get a series out of it.

Delving into Stress and Loneliness

How Are You? then, sees Steve Coogan’s immortal alter ego in roving factual mode, examining a wave of mental health issues that he believes is intensifying: “To put it simply, it’s become insane!” The journey will see him experiment with religion, meet up with former classmates, and take a lot of restorative country walks, alongside facing his history. Initial episodes culminate in a fraught but healing gathering with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), his old partner from past shows, and as this new series goes on, hidden moments from his career emerge.

For Coogan and his long-term writing/directing collaborators, How Are You? is a sideways move. While the previous show explored new ground, How Are You? often retreads it: along with bringing back former styles, the whole piece resembles the mockumentaries in recent years. As his life intertwines with the subject matter, it recalls his audio ventures.

Dual Personas of the Character

This leads to a minor issue. We see two versions of Alan: Successful Alan (with high-profile jobs) and Outcast Alan (on the sidelines), and even though the underdog Alan shone in the classic series I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a nostalgic take has developed in books and audio projects. How Are You? brings us into his space and includes Kelly in the role of Katrina, Alan’s wildly unsuitable paramour from the podcast. However, this sad story – he refuses to accept her betrayal with an acquaintance and entrepreneur – seems better suited to podcast pacing, allowing audience creativity to enhance humor. Off-screen, the character feels more expansive: television nowadays feels more suited to putting Winning Alan under pressure and watching him implode, as happened on previous shows.

The Genius of Sloppy Errors

Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: whatever medium he inhabits, Partridge remains the funniest comic creation in Britain, and temporary versions still offer huge comedy than competing shows. How Are You? has Alan in multiple creative roles, which showcases his knack for blunders and misjudgments. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, it will be included, and no one corrects his verbal errors or other mistakes in commentary. The subtle wince he shows off-camera aware that the segment was a failure never stops being funny, and the same goes for his transitional clips, topped by his earnest, flawed grins while drinking tea clumsily.

Striking Moments and Feelings

Can anything top his skip-side groans? Surely not. Visually he’s a feast too, with his new dye job several shades too light to be plausible, and his clothing showcasing loud pants, contrasting shoes, multiple gilets and excited response to fashion trends.

Moreover, the content reveals his deeper side that appeared under new creative guidance. More than once the series pulls off flashes of pathos, where his blindness exposes pain that nearly brings viewers to tears, then the comedy returns and laughter resumes. That can happen because we’ve loved him for so long: any version of Alan Partridge is always welcome back.

How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) is available for streaming and airs on BBC One.
